Boladian Residence

(Maximum 200 words) RANI Residence is located in Hillsborough on a .82 acre, relatively flat site. Designed in 1968 by noted Bay Area Architect Daniel Volkmann and Landscape Architect, Tommy Church, the home featured extensive use of clear heart redwood on both the interior and exterior. Unaltered since its completion and exhibiting the effects of deferred maintenance, the new owners with their growing, young family desired to implement a number of functional and spatial changes while imparting a more contemporary feeling to both building and grounds – all while maintaining the overall architectural integrity and spirit of the original design. Following this direction, the design goal was for all completed work to project a sense of inevitability as though always intended. Towards this end, the project included the interior restoration of interior and exterior redwood surfaces, several small additions totaling 500 SF and changes to hardscape materials while respecting exterior spatial areas and plant material. Specific changes included,

• Combining Dining and Living areas into one Great Room while maintaining the overall exiting spatial expression
• Kitchen remodel and new Family Room
• Small second floor addition
• Opening up the Entry Courtyard
• Selected window replacement
• Reinforcing a better sense of Indoor/Outdoor
